Over the past three days bread prices have risen in Yerevan and a number of other towns in the light of growth in gas and electricity prices, Haykakan Zhamanak daily says.  

Drivers' embarrassment may cost human lives, says the press release of the Armenian Police.  

 Today, the maximum buying rates at commercial banks of Yerevan were 409,5 drams for 1 dollar, 539drams for 1 EUR and 12,6 drams for 1 Russian ruble. The minimum selling rates stood at 410,7 drams for 1 dollar, 543 drams for 1 EUR and 12,7 drams for 1 Russian ruble .  

 The Armenian police have detained two activists of "We Won't Pay 150 AMD" initiative near the Municipality of Yerevan.   

 The opposition Barev Yerevan faction of the Elders' Council urges Mayor of Yerevan Taron Margaryan to present the legal documents on the public transport fare growth.  

The faction's statement sent to ArmInfo says that Barev Yerevan expects to receive a reply to the request about the current quantity of minibuses in Armenia and the companies owning them. In addition, the faction wants to know the name of the legal entity that has applied for the fare growth. The faction also demands all the documents that have lain in the basis of the decision on the public transport fare growth.
    
To recall, the Barev Yerevan faction is going to apply to the Administrative Court against the Municipality's decision. In the meantime, the Municipality has not yet presented the legal acts concerning the growth in tariffs of passenger operations. 

The Police of Moscow has allowed Armenian Human Rights Defender Karen Andreasyan to visit Hrachya Harutyunyan at a pre-trial detention unit in Moscow, RIA Novosti reports.

Harutyunyan is at Matrosskaya Tishina pre-trial detention unit. During today's interrogation at Matrosskaya Tishina, Harutyunyan refused to give any testimony. 

To recall, on July 13 Hrachya Harutyunyan's KamAZ crashed into a passenger bus near Podolsk, Russia.  The accident killed 18 people and wounded more than 40. The Tver Court of Moscow arrested Harutyunyan, and he will be in custody till September 13. 

Today, at 7 pm, young people blocked Baghramyan Avenue in Yerevan and demanded releasing Grigor Janikyan, the detained activist of "We Won't Pay 150 AMD" action.    

ArmInfo's correspondent reports from the scene that nearly 500 young people are taking part in the action of protest against the public transport fare rise from 100 AMD to 150 AMD. They are chanting "Slaves!" and "No to the new fare!" The police are still behaving tactfully and reservedly. The youth are handing out leaflets to the passengers and urge them to pay 100 AMD instead of 150 AMD.    

At the moment, the protesters are chanting Grigor Janikyan's name and making their way to Mashtots Park to decide their further steps. 

To note, since July 20 the residents of Yerevan have been paying 150 AMD to the bus and microbus drivers instead of 100 AMD. The trolleybus fare is 100 AMD instead of 50 AMD. The metro fare has remained unchanged - 100 AMD. 

 The Yerevan Municipality's arguments for raising the public transport fare to 150 AMD are absurd as the real fare must be no more than 70-80 AMD, former Chairman of the Central Bank of Armenia Bagrat Asatryan told journalists on Monday.

"Their maintenance costs are overstated. But what really matter here is that instead of carrying 13 people our 13-seat microbuses carry 25-30 people thereby giving their owners huge profits," Asatryan said.

 During his the ongoing visit to China Armenia's Education and Science Minister Armen Ashotyan has met with Chinese Deputy Education Minister Hao Ping.

The Yerevan mayor's decision on the public transport fare growth is ungrounded. Moreover, all the clarifications about that issue are illogical, Secretary of Heritage Party Stepan Safaryan said at a press conference in Yerevan on Monday.     

 The 100 AMD public transport fare may lead to transport collapse in Yerevan, Araz Baghdasaryan, representative of the Municipality of Yerevan, says on his Facebook page.     

He thinks that the public transport fare growth is substantiated. "If the tariffs are not increased now, we will face transport collapse in a few weeks. After that the situation will not be saved even by new growth in prices", he stresses. He says that the Municipality has already worked out a strategy to dampen the inflation consequences.

The time of conferences, roundtable discussions and protest actions has gone, the secretary of the parliament group of Prosperous Armenia Party Naira Zohrabyan said on Monday when asked by ArmInfo to comment on Heritage Party leader Raffi Hovannisian's call on Armenia's political forces to organize a roundtable discussion of possible solutions to the country's current problems.

"We have not received any invitation from Mr. Hovannisian, but we believe that the time of empty rhetoric has gone. What we need now is specific actions. If any party can offer specific ways to improve our social-economic and political situation, we will join it," Zohrabyan said.

She welcomes the young people protesting against the Yerevan authorities' decision to raise public transport fares in the capital, but she believes that this problem must be solved by political forces. 

In its relations with Russia Armenia must always be ready for alternative decisions, says the Sardarapat Movement.

"We must free ourselves from pro- or anti-Russian moods and focus on a pro-Armenian policy. Meanwhile, the ruling regime is seeking to prolong its life and is manipulating the interests of its people to please both Russia and the West," the movement says. 

To note, following the rise in the Russian gas price and the reports about the sale of Russian arms to Azerbaijan, more and more people in Armenia are beginning to call for revision of the country's relations with Russia.
