ArmInfo.Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev accuses the Council of Europe of double standards, differentiated treatment to Armenia and Azerbaijan and threatens to leave its ranks.
European Union, Aliyev said that public opinion in Azerbaijan regarding the Council of Europe is not so positive. "First, when we joined this organization, our expectations were related to the fact that it will help us in the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. However, the Council of Europe did not succeed in this matter, this case did not work, and it will not work. Secondly, at the beginning of our membership I was the first head of our delegation. At that time, I was a member of the Azerbaijani parliament and in 2001-2003 I directed the delegation of Azerbaijan in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. That is, I know what this organization is and how it relates to Azerbaijan. The attitude was extremely negative. We joined this organization one day with Armenia and even then saw an extremely negative attitude towards Azerbaijan with a positive attitude towards Armenia. Armenia, where elections are constantly falsified, kill politicians in the parliament, where terrorism can be said to have been adopted at the level of official policy, which occupied the territory of another state and caused suffering to millions of people as a result of war crimes, was always cared for by lobby groups in PACE, Azerbaijan was constantly attacked, "Aliyev protested. At the same time, he added that recently some official representatives of the Council of Europe organized new attacks on Azerbaijan: "They threaten us with the deprivation of membership and the application of sanctions against us. Naturally, our politicians, parliamentarians, journalists and citizens demonstrate an adequate response. First, let them ensure the implementation of more than 10 thousand decisions taken by the European Court of Human Rights in connection with the member countries. Only after that they can talk about the expulsion of Azerbaijan from members or sanctions. If this happens, then this fact will become the triumph of double standards. While more than 10 thousand decisions of the European Court are not executed for various reasons, Azerbaijan executes these decisions, if necessary, pays compensation, on the whole behaves very constructively. Therefore, targeted attacks on Azerbaijan cause disappointment, contribute to such thoughts as "why do we need such an organization". For 16 years now we have been members of the Council of Europe. I will tell you frankly, it is friendly that if Azerbaijan leaves the Council of Europe, no one will give it any significance. Nothing in our lives will change, we will not live better, worse, richer or poorer. Human rights and democracy will continue to be at the center of our attention. We do this not to please the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, unjustifiably attacking Azerbaijan. We are doing this for the purpose of developing our country, "the head of Azerbaijan concluded.
