ArmInfo. The convening of an extraordinary session of the Armenian parliament on April 7 to discuss draft amendments to the Electoral Code of the Republic testifies to one thing: fear has become the driving force behind the ruling Civil Contract party's decision-making.
This was stated by Marianna Ghahramanyan, press secretary of the Strong Armenia party, regarding the ruling Civil Contract faction's initiation of an extraordinary session of the Armenian parliament on April 7 to discuss draft amendments to the Electoral Code of the Republic.
The goal is to impose restrictions on the names of election blocs, prohibiting the use of personal names in the names of political blocs. The party's spokesperson noted that this occurred just days after they announced the creation of the "Strong Armenia with Samvel Karapetyan" bloc, around which a large public consensus had formed.
"One person in Armenia is once again frightened, but this time not because of Samvel Karapetyan's photo, but because of his name. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan instructed the ruling Civil Contract faction to convene an extraordinary session of the National Assembly of Armenia to discuss draft amendments to the Electoral Code of the Republic of Armenia. What is this, if not panic? An extraordinary session in the Armenian parliament demonstrates one thing: fear has become the driving force behind the ruling party's decision-making. However, we must disappoint you: no change can stop this process, which is only two months away from completion," Ghahramanyan emphasized.
Later, the political party announced a press conference in front of the Armenian parliament, scheduled for 12:00 PM local time. The purpose of the press meeting was to express their position on the changes initiated by the country's authorities, which, as the political party noted, are attempting to eliminate the possibility of holding free and fair elections in Armenia. As a reminder, parliamentary elections in Armenia are scheduled for June 7, 2026.
