ArmInfo. Armenian National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonyan's assertion that Armenia would withdraw from the Eurasian Economic Union and other structures if Russian gas prices rise is incorrect.
This was stated by Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev, according to the Parliamentary Newspaper. "The very framing of the question in this way appears incorrect. After all, during talks with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on April 1, Russian President Vladimir Putin provided a clear picture of the current situation: "energy prices, gas prices in Europe are skyrocketing to over $600 per 1,000 cubic meters, while Russia sells gas to Armenia at $177.5 per 1,000 cubic meters," Kosachev noted.
According to him, the current price of Russian gas provides a powerful stimulus for the development of the Armenian economy and is an important factor in social and political stability in the country. And this, Kosachev recalled, is occurring alongside a severe energy crisis in Europe and around the world. "It would be fair and honest for Armenian politicians to take this scale of Russia's support for Armenia into account, rather than speculating on hypothetical changes in pricing policy," the senator concluded.
As a reminder, on April 4, Armenian Parliament Speaker Alen Simonyan threatened to withdraw the country from the CSTO and The EAEU in case Russia suddenly decides to raise the price of gas for Armenia.
