ArmInfo. The Investigative Committee (IC) of Armenia has opened a criminal case against three individuals following an incident that occurred during a liturgy at St. Anna Church in Yerevan, where Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan was attending his election campaign.
According to the Investigative Committee's press service, the criminal case was opened under Part 1 of Article 297 (hooliganism) and Part 3 of Article 452 (interference with the activities of an official) of the Criminal Code of Armenia.
It should be noted that the incident occurred on March 29, which is Tsaghkazard (Palm Sunday - ed.) in Armenia. On that day, the Armenian prime minister, while campaigning in Yerevan, entered St. Anna Church accompanied by State Security Service (SSS) officers and representatives of the ruling Civil Contract party. As security personnel cleared a path for Pashinyan, some of those present expressed outrage at being pushed and shoved during the liturgy.
According to footage circulating on Armenian social media, one of the worshippers demanded that a member of Pashinyan's security detail "stop looking at him like that," while another swung his arm and attempted to hit Pashinyan. However, he was unable to do so, as security personnel blocked his path. Some of the worshippers shouted at Pashinyan, "Do you need to desecrate everything?" and demanded that he leave the church. Meanwhile, the Armenian prime minister walked smiling and attempted to distribute pins with a map of Armenia to the worshippers.
After Pashinyan and his entourage left the church, law enforcement officers arrived and detained two young men. Furthermore, footage was also circulated online of a security officer violently punching a young man in the face after he expressed dissatisfaction with Pashinyan's presence at the service. The blow was so powerful that the young man fell and, after rising, struggled for a long time to recover.
It was later revealed that two of the detainees were brothers David and Mikael Minasyan, both students at Yerevan Secondary School No. 29. According to journalist Suzi Badoyan, they were taken to the pretrial detention center late that night and are still being held there. The health of one of the brothers, Mikael Minasyan, deteriorated on the day of his arrest, according to the journalist. Minasyan has health issues.
It should be noted that this is not the first time that Pashinin's presence or behavior during the liturgy has provoked outrage among believers who do not support the anti-church campaign launched by the prime minister since May of last year.
