ArmInfo.During a cabinet meeting on January 29, Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Khachatryan announced plans to implement a unified traffic management system to reduce traffic congestion in Yerevan.
According to him, the working group formed at the Prime Minister's direction to address traffic congestion in Yerevan has already held two working meetings. Key tasks that are important in the initial phase have been identified, and a long, medium, and short-term plan has been developed. Discussions with all relevant agencies are ongoing. As Tigran Khachatryan noted, the city center is at an important stage of development. Plans call for the implementation of a unified management system, incorporating modern software tools designed to redistribute traffic flows according to self-regulatory logic, that is, based on variable factors.
In response, Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan noted that the number of passenger cars is rapidly growing. and there are several solutions available. According to Avinyan, this issue will require a permanent solution.
"The first step is implementing traffic management through the introduction of artificial intelligence traffic lights, which will take about 1.5 years to complete. The second step involves purchasing 250 18-meter buses, which will be the final step in the public transportation sector that we need to implement. This, one might say, sums up our strategy in the public transportation sector, at least in the ground public transportation sector," the Yerevan mayor said. He also added that the third step is the construction of the Ajapnyak metro station, which is projected to increase the number of metro users by 22%.
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan concluded by emphasizing that these "institutional mechanisms" are the only way to move beyond temporary fixes and achieve a modern, functioning urban environment.
