ArmInfo. The Mother See of Etchmiadzin announced the indefinite postponement of the Episcopal Assembly scheduled for December 10-12.
"Considering the current situation in Armenia, in particular the repression against the clergy, including arrests, and in response to the request of the bishops, the convening of the Episcopal Assembly under the leadership of the Catholicos of All Armenians is temporarily postponed," the press office of the Mother See of Etchmiadzin stated in a statement.
The assembly was convened amid an anti-church campaign waged by the Armenian authorities and the arrest of several clergy members.
On December 6, hundreds of citizens went to Zvartnots Airport to greet Catholicos of All Armenians Garegin II, who was returning from Marseille. Believers feared that the Armenian authorities, as part of their ongoing anti-church campaign, would attempt to arrest the Catholicos.
