ArmInfo. The European Union will provide Armenia with 5 million euros to combat disinformation ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for June 2026, as stated by EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos at a press conference following the 6th meeting of the Armenia-EU Partnership Council.
She expressed confidence that the 2026 elections in Armenia will be crucial for regional stability and the implementation of reforms. "Armenia can count on our support. Democracy is always under threat, and we must support the media to prevent pressure. This is very important, this is a new direction, and we support this with ?5 million funding, including in the run-up to the elections in Armenia, to ensure the fight against disinformation," she said. In this vein, she announced that the European Commissioner for Migration and Security will visit Armenia in March 2026, where important summits will be held.
Speaking about the Armenia-EU cooperation agenda, she noted that the partnership continues to strengthen. "We have much in common, and we have much to do to preserve governance, democracy, and peace. Today, we adopted a new strategic agenda that reflects this special moment in our relations. We are also working together on visa liberalization with Armenia. We presented an action plan on visa liberalization last month," she said.
Additionally, Kos emphasized that in its efforts to strengthen resilience, the EU is paying special attention to the issues of refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh, visa liberalization, and socio-economic development. "We are also developing transport, digital, and energy links. We are discussing how we can strengthen trade ties with Central Asia, and Armenia plays a central role in the regional connectivity agenda," the EU official continued. She expressed her conviction that the historic agreement in Washington brought peace and ensured closer cooperation between the parties. "In areas such as energy and digital technologies, development is crucial for ensuring economic stability. It is crucial for Armenia and Europe. The European Union stands ready to help implement the peace agreement and Armenia's 'Crossroads of Peace' initiative," Kos concluded.
