ArmInfo. While Armenian authorities talk about peace with Azerbaijan, President Ilham Aliyev is making new territorial claims against Armenia. This was written on his Facebook page by Ishkhan Saghatelyan, a member of parliament from the opposition Armenia faction, in response to statements by members of the ruling Civil Contract party that peace between Yerevan and Baku has already become a reality.
In this regard, the MP noted that since the initialing of the peace agreement in Washington on August 8, Azerbaijan has still not recognized Armenia's territory with clear borders, continuing to voice new demands. Furthermore, as Saghatelyan noted, while Armenia has renounced the right of return for the Armenians of Artsakh, Baku continues to assert its right to resettle Azerbaijanis in Armenia. "Meanwhile, the Armenian authorities not only fail to respond, but their actions actually strengthen Aliyev's position, calling those who speak the truth to the public 'revanchists,' claiming that Azerbaijani territories are under Armenia's control, accelerating the process of amending the Constitution, and cutting funding for the armed forces and the length of military service," the MP noted.
Thus, according to the opposition figure, Aliyev's statement became the most convincing proof of the veracity of the opposition's warnings. "It took Pashinyan and Aliyev a short time to deflate the huge bubble they had been inflating together for months to convince the people that peace had arrived," the MP emphasized.
In light of the above, Saghatelyan called on all states that welcomed the initialing of the peace agreement in Washington to immediately and publicly condemn Ilham Aliyev's territorial claims against Armenia. "Otherwise, your greetings will be an act of welcoming not peace, but preparation for new aggression against Armenia. Peace is only possible when there is a dignified state that is not afraid to defend its land and its citizens," the opposition leader concluded.
As a reminder, on August 8, a trilateral meeting of the leaders of the United States, Armenia, and Azerbaijan was held at the White House. During this meeting, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, US President Donald Trump, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a joint declaration aimed at resolving the conflict between Yerevan and Baku.
However, on November 3, President Ilham Aliyev stated that the return of Azerbaijanis to present-day Armenia should not frighten the Armenian people and the Armenian state. However, Aliyev did not mention the possibility of Armenians returning to Azerbaijan. Moreover, Aliyev once again asserted the sovereignty and historical territories of Armenia belong to Azerbaijan. According to him, there is no Lake Sevan, only "Lake Goychey."
