ArmInfo. The Armenian authorities are making every effort to keep the Tsitsernakaberd memorial complex to the victims of the Armenian Genocide closed during the 8th European Political Community Summit in May 2026, as noted by Edmon Marukyan, chairman of the "Bright Armenia" party, in response to a statement issued by the Chamber of Architects of Armenia. According to that statement, the restoration work at the memorial will be temporarily suspended.
The party leader noted that this decision was made during an extraordinary extended meeting of the Scientific and Methodological Council of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports (MESCS), attended by five members of the Chamber's council. "Therefore, an attempt is being made to exclude from state protocol the visit to the Armenian Genocide Memorial by foreign delegations. This is yet another sacrilege committed by the Armenian authorities," Marukyan wrote.
He also mentioned the possibility of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev attending the summit. Marukyan expressed his conviction that the decision to keep the memorial closed was also made for this reason. "If this is not the case, then refute and publish the protocol visits and meetings planned for the delegations participating in the 8th European Political Community Summit today," the party leader concluded.
