ArmInfo. The number of television channels with public status will be reduced. At its October 16 meeting, the RA National Assembly Standing Committee on Science, Education, Culture, Diaspora, Youth, and Sports approved amendments to the law "On Audiovisual Media" presented by Taguhi Ghazaryan and Sisak Gabrielyan, members of the ruling Civil Contract faction.
According to Taguhi Ghazaryan, the bill proposes reducing the number of television channels with public status from three to two. Currently, Channel One, as the main broadcaster, the spiritual and cultural channel "Shoghakat," and the news channel "Lurer" hold this status. "An assessment of the current situation shows that maintaining the required number of public broadcasters that meet the requirements established by the current legal regulations is causing quality issues," Ghazaryan stated.
She added that the freed funds from the state budget will be directed to two television companies to improve broadcast quality.
Note that the draft does not clearly specify which public broadcaster will be taken off the air. However, it is most likely referring to Shoghakat, as members of the Civil Contract have been talking about its closure for a long time. It is also worth noting that Pashinyan is currently carrying out an active anti-church campaign.
