
ArmInfo. The Armenian youth and junior national teams won eight gold, five silver, and one bronze medal, setting four world and seven European records at the World Weightlifting Championships (WWC) held in Cairo from October 9-10.
The Armenian Paralympic Committee (APC) press service told ArmInfo that the Armenian team finished third in the medal standings, behind only Uzbekistan and host country Egypt.
According to the source, eight athletes represented Armenia in the championship: five in the 18-20 age groups and three in the 15-17 age groups. Rafael Hamazaspyan (15-17) from Gyumri was the first to compete, setting three European and two world records. "He took first place with a maximum weight lifted of 115 kg, as well as in the 110 kg, 114 kg, and 115 kg categories. Rafael Hamazaspyan became the second Armenian athlete to set a world record in weightlifting," the PCA noted, adding that he will be nominated for the Master of Sports (MS) title.
Anuta Petrosyan from the Aragatsotn region, competing in the 45 kg weight class, demonstrated strong results in her international debut, winning two gold medals. According to the source, she will be awarded the title of Master of Sports of International Class (MSIC). Khoren Tsaturyan from Gyumri and Artur Babayan from Vanadzor competed in the 59 kg weight class. In their final attempts, the committee reported, Artur Babayan lifted 141 kg, setting a new European record, while Khoren Tsaturyan lifted 142 kg, beating Artur's record.
"As a result, Khoren Tsaturyan won two gold medals, and Artur Babayan won two silver medals. Artur will be nominated for the title of Master of Sports of International Class," the PKA added.
Artyom Mukhsyan from Gavar and Davit Hunanyan from Yerevan competed in the 65 kg weight category. Artyom Mukhsyan won two silver medals with a maximum lift of 69 kg and a total of 128 kg. "David Hunanyan, in turn, won a silver medal with a total of 301 kg. Both athletes will be nominated for the titles of Master of Sports of International Class and Master of Sports of International Class," the committee noted.
The youngest member of the team, Karine Manukyan from Vanadzor, set a record on her first attempt and won the gold medal. According to the source, with results of 60 kg and 110 kg, she broke European and world record standards, winning two gold medals. She will also be nominated for the Master of Sports title. Ararat Region representative Tigran Khlgatyan competed in the 88 kg weight class, competing against leading athletes from Iran and Uzbekistan. He won a bronze medal with a lift of 157 kg and will be nominated for the Master of Sports title.
According to the PCA press service, all athletes will also be included in the list of candidates for sports retirement in 2026.
