ArmInfo. Foreign films in Armenian distribution must be dubbed in Armenian. The initiative was put forward by the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports (MECS) of Armenia, which proposes to switch to showing foreign films in the RA in Armenian (dubbing and subtitles) starting from 2026
"34 years have passed since the referendum on the independence of Armenia. Despite this, foreign films continue to be released in the country's cinemas with Russian translation. I am not against Russian translation for Russian-speaking audiences, but can this issue really not be resolved?" Deputy Prime Minister of the National Assembly Ruben Rubinyan asked the head of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation.
Zhanna Andreasyan noted that back in 2021, the Law on Cinematography was adopted, which established the requirement to translate foreign films into Armenian. The imperative will only come into force in 2030, she added.
"We think that this is a very late date, and we are now introducing a new law on cinematography," she said. The Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation hopes that the legislative initiative will be discussed at the autumn session of parliament and that the new regulation will come into force in January 2026.
