ArmInfo. The United States is strengthening its position in the South Caucasus, turning Baku into a strategic partner in the issue of energy transit through the Caspian Sea. This opinion was expressed on his Facebook page by political scientist Suren Surenyants in connection with the upcoming meeting of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and US President Donald Trump in Washington today.
In this regard, the expert recalled that a memorandum of cooperation had already been signed in Washington between the state oil company of Azerbaijan SOCAR and one of the world's largest American oil companies ExxonMobil. Surenyants is confident that this is not an ordinary energy deal, but a political message. "It is noteworthy that the memorandum is being signed at the very moment when the construction of the "Trump Bridge" across Syunik is also being discussed with the prospect of potential energy transit," the political scientist noted.
He believes that this is an alarming signal for Armenia, whose territory may become the object of "big games" if the country does not formulate its own agenda. Let us recall that today, August 8, a trilateral meeting of the leaders of the United States, Armenia and Azerbaijan will be held at the White House. Trump's meeting with Pashinyan is scheduled for 14:30 Washington time (22:30 Yerevan time), with Aliyev - at 15:20 (23:20 Yerevan time). At the end of the bilateral talks, a joint statement by the leaders of the United States, Azerbaijan and Armenia is planned for 16:00 (24:00 Yerevan time).
