ArmInfo. Well-known Australian-British lawyer, legal scholar and academic Geoffrey Robertson (QC, Kansas City) is considering joining the international group of lawyers defending Russian businessman Samvel Karapetyan and supporting the group's complaints to international organizations. This was reported by the Council for the Defense of Samvel Karapetyan.
The Council reported that Robertson expressed deep concern about the excessively harsh criminal procedural measures applied to Samvel Karapetyan, emphasizing the political context of the charges brought against him.
It is noted that, in Robertson's opinion, the use of detention at the stage of preliminary investigation, accompanied by unfounded and insufficient justifications provided by the competent authorities and unfounded decisions made by the courts, is contrary to the principle of the rule of law and the guarantees provided by international law.
The Council also reported that Amal Clooney's participation in the process may be formally considered at subsequent stages of representation at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). Geoffrey Robertson is the founder and director of the law firm Doughty Street Chambers. He previously represented Armenia along with Amal Clooney in a case on prosecution for genocide denial. Geoffrey Robertson is also known for his active position on the issue of international recognition of the Armenian Genocide and the protection of the rights of the people of Artsakh.
Philanthropist and president of the Tashir Group Samvel Karapetyan was detained on the night of June 18 in Yerevan by law enforcement agencies of Armenia after he expressed support for the Armenian Apostolic Church. This was followed by open threats from the Prime Minister. On the night of June 19, the Yerevan Court of General Jurisdiction arrested Samvel Karapetyan for two months. He is being held in the Yerevan- Kentron Penitentiary Institution (the well-known "KGB basement" in the building of the National Security Service of Armenia). He is accused of publicly calling for the seizure of power in the country. Karapetyan does not admit guilt.
