ArmInfo. The words of the American Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack that the United States is ready to lease the transport corridor between Armenia and Azerbaijan for 100 years to help advance the negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan may not be a bluff, but a real plan. This was stated to RTVI by the first deputy head of the State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs Konstantin Zatulin.
The deputy believes that behind the words of the American ambassador "there is the consent of the leadership of today's Armenia and Azerbaijan to this option."
"I think that this is a very real prospect. And I even think that all the recent aggravations in Russian- Armenian and also Russian-Azerbaijani relations are precisely connected with the fact that tensions were artificially escalated by Azerbaijan and Armenia in order to avoid asking Moscow about the "Zangezur corridor," the deputy said.
Previously, Zatulin recalled, the talk was that if such a route was created, it would be controlled by Russian troops or representatives of Russia. Now, as the parliamentarian believes, "no one in Armenia or Azerbaijan is worried about this."
"It is important for them that the new masters of the region come and exercise this control. Therefore, a situation is deliberately created in which, due to the cooling of relations, it is not convenient to ask Russia about this, but it is convenient to negotiate with it and the Americans. I think that the US Ambassador to Turkey actually said what was agreed upon," he concluded.
The press secretary of the Armenian Prime Minister Nazeli Baghdasaryan assured that Armenia is not negotiating the transfer of its territories under the control of a third country and that what the US Ambassador to Turkey said has no relation to reality.
