ArmInfo. Armenia voted for the UN General Assembly resolution demanding an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. According to the official UN statement, the document was supported by 149 countries, 12 voted against and 19 delegations abstained.
The vote took place after the Security Council failed to adopt a resolution on a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages on June 4 - the United States vetoed it.
The General Assembly resolution, proposed by Palestine and 23 countries led by Spain, demands a ceasefire, the release of hostages and the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Gaza Strip (in accordance with Security Council resolution 2735 of June 10, 2024), condemns the use of starvation as a weapon of war, and demands facilitating the unimpeded entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza. Although such resolutions are not legally binding, they carry political and moral weight. According to the source, the document was adopted within the framework of the 10th emergency session of the General Assembly, which resumed its work on Thursday. The session is devoted to the illegal actions of Israel in the occupied Palestinian territory. It was first convened in April 1997. The last time the 10th emergency session was convened was in December 2024, when two resolutions were adopted: one demanding a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and another reaffirming full support for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), which has been banned by Israel.
