ArmInfo. Yerevan is interested in implementing Madrid's experience in improving air quality. As reported by the press service of the capital's municipality, this became known following a meeting between Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan and the Chairperson of the Government of the Autonomous Community of Madrid Isabel Diaz Ayuso.
In particular, the parties agreed to study Madrid's experience and apply these effective solutions in Yerevan as well. According to the source, Tigran Avinyan and Isabel Diaz Ayuso also discussed possible areas of cooperation, identifying areas of mutual interest.
Back in February 2025, the Yerevan Municipality announced the readiness of the developed four-year program to combat air pollution. It was noted that the new regulations within the program concern anthropogenic factors, including construction, exploitation of deposits, transport, heating, landfills, etc. The program, as the mayor stated during the working meeting, should present the main areas of work to improve the situation with air pollution.
Meanwhile, the air situation in Yerevan leaves much to be desired. City residents continue to complain about the air quality in the capital.
Independent experts attribute air pollution in the city primarily to uncontrolled construction, an increase in the number of cars in the city, and the cutting down of trees, which is carried out within the framework of the city hall's greening program. The authorities explain this initiative by the need to replace trees that are at the stage of losing their viability with more valuable species. However, industry experts hold the opposite opinion. They assure that the capital's city hall has committed ecocide. The central streets of the city are being planted mainly with decorative trees, which will not be able to fully perform the function of absorbing dust.
