ArmInfo. In 2024, the courts of Armenia satisfied only 11.3% of the cassation appeals of the Prosecutor General and his deputies. This was stated by the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Armenia Anna Vardapetyan at the plenary session of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia on May 8, presenting a report on the activities of the supervisory body last year.
According to her, in 2023 this figure was 5.3%. The increase in the figure last year is due to the fact that the Prosecutor General's Office, taking into account the standard decisions of the Court, does not overload the courts with cassation appeals. In general, the supervisory body sends appeals if it sees prospects for accepting cases for proceedings. Moreover, the decisions of the High Court are binding on both the Court of Appeal and the courts of primary instance.
As the Prosecutor General emphasized, the same practice is applied to the Court of Appeal, but in this case it is necessary to keep in mind one nuance: very often the supervisory body does not appeal the courts' sentences on the terms of punishment. The fact is that the supervisory body adheres to the position that it is better to start applying the punishment than to violate all reasonable terms of consideration of cases as a result of the appeal. In this case, the prosecutor's office is primarily guided by the expediency of filing appeals. The decisions of the courts of primary instances that decided to impose shorter terms of punishment than those insisted on by the prosecutor's office are also not appealed.
During the presentation of the report, Vardapetyan reported that in 2024, 40,232 cases of crimes were registered in the Republic of Armenia, of which 18,397 were in Yerevan. Compared to the previous year, the number of cases decreased by 434, or 1.1%. According to her, compared to 2023, in 2024 the number of moderate crimes decreased by 595, or 4.65%, serious crimes - by 598, or 9.8%, and especially serious crimes increased by 422, or 25.1%.
During the reporting period, the number of crimes related to intentional harm to health increased by 7.6%, crimes related to trafficking - by 89.5%, crimes against sexual inviolability of the individual - by 11.9%, crimes related to drug smuggling - by 111.4%, crimes related to fraud - by 9.9%, thefts using computer equipment - by 25.1%. In 2024, a decrease in robberies, robberies, thefts and a number of other crimes was noted. During the specified period, the number of crimes against public safety, order and health of the population decreased by 2.2%. The Prosecutor General noted that in 2024, 9,830 criminal cases against 10,691 individuals were considered and completed in the courts, which is 93.5% more than in 2023. Over the past year, 2,093 cases were recorded in the military units of the Armenian Armed Forces and other troops. Vardapetyan emphasized that 27 cases of death of military personnel were recorded in the reporting year, which is 50% less than in 2023.
By judicial acts issued during 2024 on claims filed in the reporting and previous years, 18 real estate objects were actually restored, the cadastral value of which is about 2 billion 785 million 511 thousand drams, according to preliminary estimates close to the market value.
