ArmInfo. The "Five Human Rights Defenders Initiative" will try to hold accountable the police officers who allowed the beating of defendant Samvel Vardanyan during the latter's transportation from the Investigative Committee to the pretrial detention center.
In a statement by " Five Human Rights Defenders Initiative", it is reported that lawyers Ruben Melikyan and Varazdat Harutyunyan have appealed to the supervising prosecutor with a motion to initiate criminal prosecution against the two police officers who were with Samvel Vardanyan. "Considering the commitment to the rule of law and the need for a prompt response, which the Prosecutor General previously stated at the session of the National Assembly Committee on State and Legal Affairs, we consider it important to take additional procedural measures to assist the Armenian Prosecutor's Office in fulfilling this obligation," the lawyers' statement reads. The initiative also noted that a year ago there were sufficient grounds to start a criminal case against these police officers. In this vein, Melikyan and Harutyunyan drew pointed out that the supervising prosecutor has seven days to review and either approve or reject their petition.
