ArmInfo. The Russian Embassy in Armenia shared a publication in connection with the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire.
"We mourn together with the Armenian people in connection with the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire," the Russian Embassy said in a publication on social networks.
On April 14, 1995, the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of Russia adopted a statement "On the condemnation of the genocide of the Armenian people in 1915-1922." It stated that it was adopted on the basis of irrefutable historical facts testifying to the extermination of Armenians in the territory of Western Armenia in 1915-1922.
The document, in particular, recalls that, on Russia's initiative, the great European powers back in 1915 qualified the actions of the Ottoman Empire against the Armenian people as a crime against humanity. It also notes that the physical destruction of the fraternal Armenian people in their historical homeland was committed with the aim of creating conditions for the destruction of Russia.
The State Duma condemned the organizers of the destruction of Armenians, expressed sympathy for the Armenian people and recognized April 24 as the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Genocide.
On April 24, 2015, Russian President Vladimir Putin took part in a ceremony to commemorate the victims of the Armenian Genocide, which took place at the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial Complex. In his speech, the head of the Russian state stated that the events of 1915 shocked the entire world, and in Russia they were perceived as their own grief, noting that hundreds of thousands of defenseless and homeless Armenians received refuge on Russian territory and were saved.
The President also recalled that it was Russian diplomacy that achieved international condemnation of the violence against the Armenian people - on the initiative of the Minister of Foreign Affairs S.D. Sazonov, already in 1915, Russia, France and Great Britain in a joint statement directly called what happened a crime against humanity and civilization.
