ArmInfo. If in previous years the highest level of dust was recorded in Yerevan among the cities under consideration, then in 2024 this figure decreased. This was reported to Mayor Tigran Avinyan during a working meeting of the capital's municipality.
In particular, it was noted that among other cities of Armenia, Yerevan is no longer in first place in terms of air pollution, but in fourth place. The fact that the air quality in the capital is improving, as Avinyan noted, is evidenced by data from 173 sensors installed at construction sites in Yerevan.
At the same time, it was noted that the level of air pollution increases precisely in the winter period, which is associated with the heating season. The mayor's office once again assured that during this period, the burning of various types of fuel for heating purposes is added to the main sources of air pollution (construction, transport, operation of open mines), which leads to an increase in dust and smoke in the air.
Citing data for March, the City Hall presented the average air quality index (AQI) value, but only for 2 out of 6 indicators - PM 10 (coarse, visible to the naked eye) and PM 2.5 (fine particles), while for a complete picture the following indicators are also needed: carbon monoxide (CO), ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and sulfur dioxide (SO2). Thus, in March, the PM2.5 level was 91 ?g / m3, and PM10 - 37 ?g / m3. These values, as noted during the working meeting, are in the range of or . At the same time, Tigran Avinyan also referred to the Hydrometeorological Center's report on air pollution in Armenia for 2024, which states that, compared to previous years, the level of dust pollution in Yerevan has decreased.
Despite the assurances of the city authorities, city residents continue to complain about the air quality in Yerevan. Independent experts attribute air pollution in the capital primarily to uncontrolled construction, the increase in the number of cars in the city, and the cutting down of trees, which is carried out within the framework of the city hall's program for greening the city. The authorities explain this initiative by the need to replace trees that are at the stage of losing their viability with more valuable species. However, industry experts hold the opposite opinion. They assure that the capital's city hall has committed ecocide. The central streets of the city are being planted mainly with decorative trees, which will not be able to fully perform the function of absorbing dust.
