ArmInfo. Iran welcomes the signing of a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and the sooner a decision is made on the date of signing the document, the better. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi state at a joint press conference with his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan in Yerevan,.
"This agreement is crucial for establishing stability and long-term peace in the South Caucasus. It is also vital for the development of economic relations. And we hope that the existing problems will be resolved soon and the agreement will be signed," the diplomat said. Acknowledging the risks of escalation in the region, Araghchi expressed hope that the signing of a peace treaty will minimize these threats.
At the same time, the Iranian diplomat avoided giving a direct answer to the question of what exactly Tehran is prepared to do if Azerbaijan tries to forcefully obtain the corridor through Armenia's Syunik region. Araghchi recalled that Iran is in favor of resolving regional problems through dialogue and diplomacy, and is against military actions to resolve contradictions. "Transit routes must operate with respect for jurisdiction, territorial integrity and laws of countries. They are only acceptable within this framework. Any other solution is unacceptable," Araghchi concluded.
