ArmInfo. Despite the expert opinions voiced at various sites about the viability of trees on the streets of Yerevan, the capital's mayor's office continues to stubbornly assure that only deformed, sick and old trees are cut down.
In particular, at the next working meeting of the mayor's office, the head of the NGO Armen Begoyan reported that since March 20, 80 trees that have lost their viability have been cut down on Tumanyan Street. According to him, mainly elms were removed. Only 30 types of elms were preserved on this street, since the latter, according to experts, do not pose any threats. At the same time, 95 cercises or crimson trees, or as they are popularly called , were planted, and another 34 will be planted a little later. Thus, as Begoyan noted, there will be a total of 60 more trees on Tumanyan Street than there were before.
At the same time, he said that by April 10, or maybe even earlier, due to favorable weather conditions, sanitary pruning of trees will be carried out in 300 courtyards of Yerevan, 19 parks and on 18 streets and avenues.
Since 2023, the Yerevan City Hall has been implementing a program to replace trees, especially in the city center. The authorities explain this initiative by the need to replace trees that are at the stage of losing their viability with more valuable species. In fact, according to experts, the capital's city hall has committed ecocide. In particular, in 2024, the city hall began mass cutting down healthy trees on Tumanyan Street, continuing the work in 2025 and cutting down completely healthy trees. Days earlier, the Armenian segment of social networks was filled with horrifying footage of the capital's trees being cut down.
In addition, a few days ago, blogger Eduard Ayrumyan reported on the mass cutting of healthy oak trees in the Yerevan Botanical Garden. According to him, about 30 viable oak trees have been cut down in the last few months.
