ArmInfo. Since March 1, the border service at the Margara checkpoint on the state border of Armenia and Turkiye has been carried out exclusively by the Border Troops of the Republic of Armenia. RA Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan wrote about this on his Facebook page.
He noted that the Margara checkpoint is currently not functioning due to the closure of the state border between Armenia and Turkiye. In the summer of 2022, in accordance with the decision of the RA government, the checkpoint was completely renovated and permanent service by units of the Border Troops of the Russian Federation began there.
"I express my gratitude to the Border Troops of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation for the service rendered on this section of the Armenian-Turkish state border. The transfer of the Margara border checkpoint to the subordination of the Border Troops of the Republic of Armenia means that from March 1, 2025, border control of all persons entering and leaving the Republic of Armenia will be carried out exclusively by the Border Troops of the Republic of Armenia, since only the Border Troops of the Republic of Armenia serve at all such checkpoints (active and inactive), "the head of the Armenian government emphasized.
Earlier, it was reported that more than 1 billion drams were spent on the repair of the Margara checkpoint on the Armenian-Turkish border. Initially, the costs were planned at 800 million drams, but the final costs amounted to slightly more than 1 billion drams.
Recall that Turkiye's special representative in the negotiations on the settlement of relations between Armenia and Turkiye, Serdar Kilic, said in January 2023 that Armenia and Turkiye had reached an agreement to give new impetus to the work on opening the border for third-country nationals.
"Regarding the opening of the border for third-country nationals, our minister mentioned in his speech that an agreement had been reached to give new impetus to the work on this issue. The two ministers came to this agreement, and we will do everything possible to start operating the Margara bridge as soon as possible," the special representative of Turkey said, presenting the results of the meeting of the foreign ministers of Armenia and Turkiye in Ankara.
