ArmInfo. It is necessary to use all available platforms to increase international pressure on Azerbaijan so that this country pays the ultimate price for holding our compatriots in Baku prisons. This was stated on February 28 by Artsakh Ombudsman and human rights activist Gegham Stepanyan at the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial Complex where memorial events are being held today to commemorate the 37th anniversary of the pogroms of Armenians in Sumgait.
According to Stepanyan, the current plight of the Armenian people is a direct continuation of the tragedies that unfolded in 1988 in Sumgait, Baku, Gandzak, and other places. The human rights activist believes that Azerbaijan's lack of accountability and insufficient actions on the Armenian side have led to the current situation. "There is no doubt that the situation demands clear actions. We have no right to delay; it is imperative that we mobilize all our efforts both in Armenia and in the Diaspora to bring our compatriots back to their homeland as soon as possible," Stepanyan said.
The Artsakh Ombudsman also noted with regret the lack of due attention from Armenian society towards the illegal actions taking place in Baku. He supported his statement by pointing out that only a few concerned citizens came today to express solidarity with those currently on trial in Baku.
