ArmInfo. The process of Armenia joining the European Union began in 2019, when Yerevan recalled its representative to the CSTO, Yuri Khachaturov, as stated by political scientist and internationalist Grigor Balasanyan on February 24 during the discussions "EAEU or EU. Armenia's choice in the context of shaping a new global order".
According to him, the Eurasian Economic Union and the Collective Security Treaty Organization are both crucial components in the security system, and the recall of their representative already then demonstrated the start of freezing relations with the CSTO. The authors and organizers of the new initiative to join the EU are fully aware of its lack of significance, as it has nothing to do with the EU. He pointed out the actions of opponents of Yerevan's continued participation in the EAEU, noting that they are taking a very cunning path. For example, based on their statements, one can conclude that if relations with the Russian Federation worsen, the latter may stop gas supplies, and in this case one can count on receiving Azerbaijani "blue" fuel. Thus, the political scientist continued, an attempt is being made to involve the country in the sphere of influence of the Turkish-Azerbaijani tandem with a subsequent problem-free solution to the issue of the so-called Zangezur corridor.
The expert noted that in Europe itself there are "friends" of Armenia, who give hope to the country's authorities that Armenia is a European nation and should become part of it. "But here we must keep in mind where the EU is and what it represents? One of the most active countries is France, whose Ambassador recently stated that Yerevan actually recognized Nagorno-Karabakh as part of Azerbaijan's territory back in 1991. This raises questions about what Paris has been doing for 30 years in the OSCE Minsk Group. Also, it is important to note France's interest in the Turkish-Azerbaijani project to open the Zangezur corridor. In particular, companies from Kazakhstan, fearing sanctions from the West, cannot export uranium through Russian territory. The opening of the Zangezur corridor will solve this problem for Paris, which has previously faced challenges in obtaining nuclear fuel from Africa," the expert emphasized.
