ArmInfo. The Artsakh Ombudsman Gegham Stepanyan responded to the statements made today by Speaker of the Parliament Alen Simonyan, who said "if the people of Artsakh truly wanted a homeland, they would fight for it." He noted that "It is the Armenian authorities and the mass media serving them that sow the seeds of hatred towards the people of Artsakh. The fight against them implies the fight against the state propaganda machine."
In this regard, Stepanyan mentioned that when the international human rights organization Freedom House presented an English-language report on ethnic cleansing in Artsakh and documented crimes of Azerbaijan, he inquired about making the report accessible to the Armenian public. According to the Artsakh Ombudsman, this would inform people about what happened in Artsakh and ultimately eliminate a series of meaningless questions such as "why didn't you fight? or could you stay and fight? etc."
He also expressed regret that it is unlikely for such reports to have any impact at present. "It was probably naive to think that a report or other similar materials could influence the situation, as hatred is still being propagated by the government and its media. To combat this, there is a need to challenge the state's propaganda machine. Despite being able to provide numerous examples of selflessness in response to the Chairman of the National Assembly of Armenia, these efforts seem futile in the face of immorality, pettiness and cynicism of a cosmic scale," the Artsakh Ombudsman concluded.
