ArmInfo.Iran is against any road on the territory of Armenia that would serve as a corridor, as stated by Iranian Ambassador to Armenia, Mehdi Sobhani, during a press conference in Yerevan on February 6.
"Iran is not against unblocking roads, as long as it is done with respect for territorial integrity and national sovereignty. We support unblocking roads in Armenia, but it must be carried out while respecting territorial integrity and national sovereignty. We oppose the roads that operate according to a corridor logic," Sobhani added.
Touching upon the route from mainland Azerbaijan to its exclave Nakhichevan through Iranian territory, Sobhani recalled that Azerbaijan has always had connections with Nakhichevan. After 2020, Azerbaijan came even closer to both the borders of Armenia and Iran. "The previous route that Azerbaijan used was relatively long. We have proposed a new route, and after the completion of road construction work, the distance will be 50 km. At the same time, movement through Iranian territory will be carried out in compliance with Iranian laws and within the framework of Iran's sovereignty," the Iranian ambassador noted.
