ArmInfo. Given Azerbaijan's long-standing practice of desecrating Armenian monuments, the remains of deceased Artsakh residents are under a real threat of destruction. This is stated in a report received by ArmInfo from the Center for International and Public Law, based on satellite images showing acts of desecration of graves and documented by the Caucasus Heritage Watch (CHW) organization.
The Center, referring to the research conducted by the "Armenian Center for Justice and Human Rights" in partnership with the "Center for International and Comparative Law", reports that 46 temporary burial sites in the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic are currently under threat. "The desecration of Armenian graves could occur at any time, depriving families of the opportunity to mourn their loved ones with dignity and to practice important religious traditions. Therefore, pressure must be put on Azerbaijan to exhume and return the bodies of the deceased," the report says.
