ArmInfo. The increase in the fare on Yerevan public transport is justified, since the quality of services has significantly improved. This was stated to journalists on February 4 by the Chairperson of the RA National Assembly Committee on Social Issues Eriknaz Tigranyan.
According to her, the new quality of services invariably leads to new prices for them. The MP emphasized that she did not see any poor people among those who boycott or call for a boycott of the application of the new fare on public transport. In any case, the MP continued, a preferential travel system is applied for the poor. Tigranyan noted that discontent is mainly expressed by older people, for whom the use of new technologies is an innovation. "This fact is a matter of time, and the issue will be resolved in the near future," Tigranyan emphasized.
She added that all this has nothing to do with the boycott, which is essentially a political action, behind which stand political forces and groups supporting them. The real discontent, as Tigranyan noted, may be connected with the lack of knowledge on how to use the new technology.
On February 1, a new fare for public transport came into force in Yerevan, which is now 150 drams instead of 100 drams. The opposition in the Yerevan Council of Elders called for a boycott of this decision, calling on city residents to pay the same 100 drams. This call was supported mainly by people of retirement age.
