ArmInfo. Back in 2022, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan expressed his commitment to changing the foreign policy vector and reorienting himself toward the West. A similar opinion was expressed in the Factor podcast by the Armenian Prime Minister's associate, his unofficial adviser and the leader of the Republic party, Aram Sargsyan, in response to the question of whether the Armenian Prime Minister and his ruling party, the Civil Contract, would support their initiative to hold a referendum on European integration in the country.
According to him, Pashinyan shares their desire to reorient the country, but cannot speak about it openly. And to the host's remark that the Armenian Prime Minister even "fell ill" with coronavirus in order to avoid participating in the informal CIS summit, Sargsyan, in particular, said: "You know, the Armenian Prime Minister has the example of Mikheil Saakashvili (former President of Georgia - ed.) before his eyes. And it is obvious that if forces in the orbit of Russian influence come to power in Armenia, or Russia wins in this region, then Pashinyan will find himself in Saakashvili's position. Therefore, the Prime Minister of Armenia should be interested in Russia not winning in this region. And in order for Russia not to win in this region, Pashinyan must take proportionate steps to assist those forces that are not interested in Russia's victory in the South Caucasus, and one of the effective steps in this direction is to apply for EU membership," the leader of the Republic party said.
At the same time, Sargsyan admitted that the Armenian Prime Minister is trying to do this as carefully as possible in order to minimize possible threats from Russia. However, according to Sargsyan, in such situations, specifying the action contains fewer risks, since it is more obvious who the threat is coming from, and there will be fewer loopholes to shift the blame and responsibility to someone else in the event of real aggression.
