ArmInfo. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot thanked his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan for his condolences over the natural disaster in Mayotte.
"Thank you for your message of solidarity, dear Ararat Mirzoyan. Our thoughts are with the people of Mayotte, who have been seriously affected by this disaster," Barrot wrote on Twitter (X).
Earlier, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan wrote on his Twitter microblog: "Deeply saddened by the catastrophic destruction caused by Cyclone Chido in Mayotte, which resulted in numerous casualties and significant damage. I express Armenia's solidarity with France and the population affected by this natural disaster."
The deadly tropical cyclone Cyclone Chido hit southeast Africa on December 14. The hurricane, with speeds of over 220 kilometers per hour, caused serious material damage to the island, with many buildings and temporary homes destroyed, including the hospital building in the capital Mamoudzou and the Mamoudzou harbor.
Mayotte Governor Francois-Xavier Bieuville said the death toll, according to official figures, is currently 14 people, but could be in the hundreds or even approaching a thousand. More than 800 rescuers have been sent to the island from mainland France and the neighboring colony of Reunion.
