ArmInfo.Russia is taking constructive measures in Transcaucasia, and thanks to these efforts, Baku and Yerevan are successfully moving towards normalizing bilateral relations, as stated by Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, at a briefing for military attaches of foreign states.
"The situation in Transcaucasia remains challenging. The desire of extra-regional players, primarily the United States and the European Union, to strengthen their positions in the region, maintain control over Georgia and bring Armenia into their sphere of influence has a destructive impact on its development," he said, Interfax reports.
According to him, the West is seeking to destabilize the situation by funding and directing protests in Georgia. "These attempts show an interest in drawing the country into active anti-Russian actions, similar to the Ukrainian scenario," the military leader noted. Gerasimov went on to say that, unlike the destructive actions of the West, Russia is taking constructive measures in the region. "Thanks to the efforts of our state, the positive progress of Baku and Yerevan towards normalizing bilateral relations is obvious. Thus, the delimitation of one of the most challenging sections of the interstate demarcation line between the Gazakh region of Azerbaijan and Armenia's Tavush region has now been completed," Gerasimov said.
