ArmInfo. The oldest Red Bridge in Yerevan is being restored in partnership with the community and the private sector.
As ArmInfo was told by the press service of the city hall, 20% of the more than 80-meter-long structure has been preserved. Moreover, after the restoration is complete, the bridge will be accessible only to pedestrians.
"The project of the centuries-old bridge was developed with the aim of preserving all valuable elements and historical layers, therefore, reconstruction and strengthening are not envisaged," the statement of the capital's municipality says.
The Red Bridge is a destroyed structure across the Hrazdan River in Yerevan, the construction of which dates back to the 12th century. Before the opening of the Victory Bridge in 1945, it was the main and only bridge across the Hrazdan, connecting the city with the right bank. The name "Red" comes from the color of the volcanic tuff used in its construction. The bridge is also known as the Old Hrazdan Bridge and the Khoja Pilava Bridge, named after the wealthy merchant from Kanaker who financed its reconstruction.
