ArmInfo. The Armenian authorities want to create a new lever for themselves to cancel the election results by amending the Electoral Code. This was stated to journalists on November 8 by David Khazhakyan, a representative of the Bright Armenia party.
According to him, the amendments actually give the RA government the right to cancel the voting results the day after they are announced by declaring a state of emergency or martial law, calling new elections. In an unfavorable situation for itself, when there is no opportunity to attract allies to its side, the government can artificially declare the results invalid. "This is an unacceptable approach, since even in such a situation the country's parliament will not have even temporary opportunities for restraint. The government's decision to declare a state of emergency or martial law is approved by the National Assembly, but even in this case, we may be talking about hours during which the cabinet can cancel the voting results," Khazhakyan noted.
He emphasized that often the most democratic governments become anti-democratic during their term. For example, in Moldova, the main opponent of the representative of the ruling party in that country was removed from the election campaign. Moreover, it is curious that many international organizations that criticized the previous authorities for such actions, in this particular case, simply remained silent. The situation is repeating itself in Armenia, the politician continued, pointing out that not a single international organization has spoken out against the proposed regulations. "And I personally have no doubt that these regulations can serve the interests of the authorities," Khazhakyan emphasized.
On November 8, the National Assembly of Armenia is holding hearings on amendments to the Electoral Code, according to which, if a state of emergency or martial law is declared, the election results can be annulled.
