ArmInfo.Fethullah Gulen, the main opponent of Turkish President Recep Erdogan and the leader of the Turkish opposition organization FETO, has passed away. This became known from a statement published on the Herkul portal, as reported by Lenta.ru.
Gulen died at the age of 83 in the USA, where he had been residing since 1999. Fethullah Gulen was a Turkish Islamic preacher and public figure. He founded the Hizmet movement, which includes a network of educational institutions, charities, media companies and other projects. Gulen's ideology aimed to promote interreligious dialogue and educational reforms. Many observers believe that
Gulen was Erdogan's "godfather" until a falling out occurred between them. Their paths diverged after Erdogan came to power in Turkey in 2003. On July 15, 2016, an attempted coup d'etat took place in Turkey, for which the Turkish government held Gulen responsible and demanded his extradition from the United States. Gulen denied any involvement in the coup attempt.
