ArmInfo. The European Union supports Armenian-Turkish normalization and hopes that special envoys of the two countries will meet in the near future, EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus Toivo Klaar told the RFE/Radio Liberty Armenian service, referring to the process of Armenian-Turkish normalization.
Communicating with both Mr. Rubinyan and Mr. Kilic, Mr Klaar heard the interest of both parties in achieving progress in this direction. And the European Union, of course, supports this. Therefore, Mr Klaar hopes that in the near future this process will really move forward and give results for the sake of Armenia, for the sake of Turkey, for the sake of the region.
The launch of the process of normalization of relations between Yerevan and Ankara was announced on December 13, 2021 by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu. At the same time, he emphasized that Ankara will act in coordination with Azerbaijan regarding steps to normalize relations with Armenia. After this, special representatives of the two countries on this issue were appointed - Vice-Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia Ruben Rubinyan and Ambassador of Turkey Serdar Kilic, who held 4 meetings.
The last meeting took place on July 1, 2022 in Vienna. At that meeting, the parties agreed to open the land border to citizens of third countries as soon as possible. However, during this period the border was opened once, and only for trucks on which the Armenian government sent humanitarian aid to victims of the earthquake in Turkey. No other visible progress has been registered in Armenian-Turkish relations since 2022. On the sidelines of the 2024 international diplomatic forum in Antalya, Turkey's Special Representative for regulating relations with Armenia Serdar Kilic proposed holding another meeting with the Armenian side in Yerevan. Rubinyan promised to think about it. There is no decision on this yet.
