ArmInfo.. The European Union has been involved in the process of ensuring stability and security in the South Caucasus for a long time. EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus Toivo Klaar stated at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum.
"We consider the security and prosperity of the region very important. And that is why we have offered assistance to Armenia and Azerbaijan in resolving this long conflict. Peace is not the absence of war, it is a broad, detailed agreement that all parties need to achieve long-term sustainable relations," the European official added.
According to him, it is necessary not only to lay down the weapons, but also to achieve sustainable peace. In his opinion, the region will only benefit from the resolution of the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. He also recalled that an agreement had been reached on border demarcation based on the Alma- Ata Declaration of 1991, and pointed out the need to ensure the opening of all regional ties.
At the same time, Klaar pointed out the interest that Turkey shows in the processes in the South Caucasus. In this vein, he expressed hope that success will be achieved in the process of normalization of Armenian- Turkish relations and Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey will work towards sustainable peace in the South Caucasus.
"The time has come to lay down the weapons and stimulate peace, promote the development of trade and economic relations. Armenia and Azerbaijan must make efforts to come to lasting peace in the region," Klaar said.
