Both sides have already taken bold steps to put the past behind them, she said. "I applaud you and your governments for the courage you are showing to achieve this goal," she told her Armenian and Azerbaijani counterparts.
Opening the two-day talks, Minister Baerbock stressed that it takes "real commitment and determination" to move forward and that reaching an agreement between the two Caucasus states would have "a positive effect beyond the borders of both countries" and "open the way to a better future and prosperity in the South Caucasus."
The German Foreign Minister also noted that the negotiations in Berlin should continue the "productive discussions" that began two weeks ago in Munich. She also indicated that Berlin wants to offer "a suitable platform for progress" in the negotiations. "Germany is making efforts to ensure that unresolved issues between Armenia and Azerbaijan are resolved peacefully and without the use of force. For this, it is important that peace negotiations between the two countries end as soon as possible," the German Foreign Minister noted before the start of the negotiations, DW reports.
The agreement on peace talks in Berlin was reached at a meeting between German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev at the Munich Security Conference in mid-February. Following its results, Scholz said that Yerevan and Baku are ready to resolve their differences without the use of violence. He welcomed the willingness of both sides to seek a solution to existing differences and open issues "exclusively peacefully and without the use of violence."
