ArmInfo. Analyzing the actions of the Armenian authorities, we can conclude that the country may find itself completely alone in geopolitical terms, Armenian political scientist Beniamin Matevosyan told ArmInfo.
According to him, one cannot help but pay attention to the fact that the country is consistently, step by step, continuing the process aimed at the withdrawal of all Russian military structures, starting from the 102nd military base, and ending with peacekeepers and border troops.
"Literally a couple of days we witnessed the story of the Azerbaijani blogger Kamil Zeynalli, accused in Armenia of committing serious crimes. At the request of the Armenian side, he was detained and then released. It is curious that from the Armenian side, unlike the Azerbaijani side, no or intelligible comments. As a result, this citizen returns to Azerbaijan, and in Armenia, sources associated with the authorities begin an active campaign against the Russian Federation, aimed at the country's exit from the CIS, the EAEU and the CSTO. All this fits well into the logic of the authorities' actions to withdraw from the country of all Russian military," the political scientist said.
To substantiate his words, he cited statements made several months ago by representatives of the Armenian authorities about the need for the republic's non-bloc participation in geopolitical processes. It was in this context that Matevosyan linked the intentions of official Yerevan to change the Constitution, which would record the non-aligned status of the state, which, in turn, would lead to the withdrawal of Russian troops. "Against this background, statements about the need to diversify security systems look strange, to say the least. On the one hand, they talk about the need to leave the CSTO, and on the other, about the need to deepen relations with Russia, which is practically impossible," Matevosyan said.
He also expressed concerns about the security of Armenia in the context of the presence of European observers. Referring to a recent statement by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, who said that the mission's tasks include, among other things, monitoring the movement of Russian and Iranian troops, Matevosyan noted that in this case it becomes clear why Russia is against their presence. "What or who do they want to transport through Armenia that they are fighting so much against the Russian military presence in the region?" - the expert asks. On the other hand, Iran's negative reaction to the presence of third parties also creates tension.
As a result, Matevosyan believes, Armenia risks spoiling relations with almost all its neighbors and remaining completely alone.
"The processes that are currently taking place will lead to the fact that Armenia will remain a complete orphan, which Turkey and Azerbaijan will not fail to take advantage of. In this case, not only Syunik will be on their minds. Why take one region when you can take over the whole of Armenia. Azerbaijan, By the way, it is guided by precisely this logic, and the actions of official Yerevan lead to the fact that the steps of Ankara and Baku are being implemented," he said.
