ArmInfo. The current Constitution of Armenia contains provisions that are unacceptable in the context of new geopolitical changes in the region. Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Alen Simonyan statedon January 31 at a joint meeting with Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Parliament Marketa Pekarova Adamova.
According to him, it was geopolitical changes, rather than Azerbaijan's pressure, that led the government to the need to develop a new draft of the Basic Law. The speaker emphasized that the commission on constitutional changes was established long before Azerbaijan spoke about the need for these changes.
As Simonyan mentioned, since the declaration of Armenia's independence, there have been provisions in the fundamental documents that need to be revised. " We must understand in which direction Armenia is moving and what goals it is pursuing, and what's the meaning of the existence of the Republic of Armenia. Is that existence for us to restore the historic [Greater Armenia ], or is it about the citizen of the Republic of Armenia who must be safe and have a prosperous life? We must answer these questions, and I think that the answers to them are not clear-cut in our society," he noted, expressing the conviction that "Armenia can't be something amorphous and nobody can argue about this."
