ArmInfo. Chair of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Ben Cardin, called on the Azerbaijani authorities to stop persecuting their critics and oppositionists.
"Azerbaijan's assault on journalists, illegal detention of opposition & alleged use of transnational repression are anti-democratic tactics. Baku must release political prisoners & halt harassment to be part of the international community, ahead of COP29," the senator wrote on his Twitter (X) page.
It should be noted that since November last year, the Azerbaijani authorities began a new stage of repression against opposition political figures, as well as journalists and bloggers. Dozens of journalists and oppositionists were detained on fabricated criminal cases. The civilized international community as a whole is turning a blind eye to what is happening in Baku. Only PACE reacted to what was happening, suspending the participation of the Azerbaijani delegation in the work of the Organization for a year due to violations committed by Baku in the field of human rights, taken by the country 20 years ago when joining the Council of Europe.
