The Munich prosecutor's office has filed corruption charges against two former MPs of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) party in connection with allegedly being bribed by Azerbaijan, European Pravda reported, citing Spiegel.
It is noted that there were respective suspicions also regarding former politician Karin Strenz, but she died in 2021.
The investigation lasted more than four years and ended with accusations of corruption and bribery of elected officials.
Lintner is accused of receiving funds from the authorities of Azerbaijan and handing them to some other then MPs, including Strenz, in exchange for the adoption of such decisions that were beneficial to Azerbaijan, particularly at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).
The Munich prosecutor's office believes that Strenz had agreed to act "in accordance with Azerbaijan's expectations."
Fischer is facing the same charges. Accordingly, in 2011, he allegedly made an arrangement with a representative of the parliament of Azerbaijan to support a beneficial line for Baku at the PACE, in exchange for a monetary reward in the future. It's about "positive" speeches, transmission of confidential information, and voting.
Lintner actually does not deny that he lobbied in favor of Azerbaijan and admitted that his companies received more than 3 million euros from Azerbaijan. Also, he has now stated that the criminal charges are not fair.
