ArmInfo. The constitutional revolution is approaching Armenia, as the head of the current administration and his team have already openly stated. This is stated in a statement by the Hayakve Initiative (Armenian vote).
According to the source, under the guise of constitutional reforms, an attempt is being made to eliminate independent Armenian statehood, turning it into a semi-state entity dependent on Turkey and Azerbaijan. "The purpose of the adoption of the is the actual abolition of the Declaration of Independence of Armenia, which defines the national goals of the Armenians, namely: the construction of a powerful national state, international recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide, the reunification of Armenia and Artsakh. The representatives of the current administration themselves admitted that they are doing all this under the compulsion of Baku and Ankara. In fact, on the direct instructions of our enemies, they want to establish unconstitutional rules by the hands of the people, which will put an end to the existence of independent Armenian statehood," the statement emphasizes.
Its authors note that this monstrous action is an attempt to deprive Armenians of their historical rights, cultural and historical heritage, to destroy the memory and dignity of the Armenian people. "We, the participants and supporters of the Hayakve Initiative, have consistently fought to ensure that the national goals set out in the Declaration of Independence of Armenia become a reality, and now we take on the decisive responsibility in the fight against this anti-national and anti-state phenomenon and destructive process. We call on all national forces and citizens concerned about the fate of the Motherland to join this fight and prevent the collapse of the independent Armenian statehood," said the statement, which was also signed by the 5165 National Conservative Movement Party, the Union of Karabakh War Veterans public organization and others.
On January 19, Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan announced the need to adopt a new Constitution. "The Republic of Armenia needs a new Constitution. Not constitutional changes, but a new Constitution. We must have a Constitution that will make the republic more competitive and more viable in new geopolitical and regional conditions," Pashinyan said.
Commenting on this statement, RA Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan in an interview with the RFE/RL's Armenian service said that Azerbaijan considers the reference in the Constitution of the republic to the Declaration of Independence, which mentions Nagorno-Karabakh, problematic. "They raised this issue, they said that, yes, this is a problem, they presented legal problems, and accordingly, we, in our turn, considered their formulations to be problematic," Mirzoyan said. At the same time, he stated that Baku did not put forward demands on the issue of the Constitution of Armenia in the draft peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan. "There is no provision on the Constitution of Armenia in the draft peace agreement. Yes, the parties see each other's legal problems in the general peace process and give explanations. There will be more such discussions. As for our Constitution, in addition to solving internal issues, it has a broader scope significance and can influence regional relations and relations between Armenia and the world. But there are no requirements or text regarding part of the Constitution in the draft peace agreement," the head of the Armenian Foreign Ministry noted.
In turn, back in 2021, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev announced the need to rewrite the Constitution of Armenia. In an interview with the Turkish Anadolu Agency, as he said "the text of the Basic Law of the neighboring country "contains references to territorial claims" to Baku and Ankara." "Let Armenia correctly perceive the newly formed reality, take steps in accordance with this reality, look at the map and find itself there, if, of course, it can," Aliyev said.
