ArmInfo. In Nagorno-Karabakh, we have witnessed yet another humanitarian crisis affecting tens of thousands of people. President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, stated in his speech at the winter session of PACE.
"This acute humanitarian crisis has resulted in a mass exodus of the Armenian population from the region. We must take all necessary measures to provide immediate humanitarian assistance, as well as to resolve the long-term problems of the ethnic Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh. At the same time, the increased and urgent needs of Armenia resulting from the events of September last year, must be properly and adequately resolved," he added.
At the same time, Nikos Christodoulides emphasized that Cyprus supports the normalization of relations and the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan within the framework of EU mediation, which will undoubtedly contribute to long-term stability and prosperity of the entire region. "Any incentives to promote and encourage such development must be balanced, carefully designed and implemented," he said.
The Cypriot President added that the above-mentioned crises and tragedies demonstrate that prolonged political impasses should not be taken lightly.
"The lack of diplomacy and dialogue can create cycles of constant violence with devastating consequences. The reality is that there are no 'frozen conflicts'. As I have said, the vacuum created by the absence of sustainable, lasting peace becomes fertile ground for crises This is something we know very well in my country. Human rights in Cyprus remain an unfulfilled promise for all Cypriots as a result of Turkey's illegal invasion in 1974 and ongoing occupation," the Cypriot leader said.
