ArmInfo.Armenia should clarify its border demarcation principles, starting the process with those areas where incursions by Azerbaijani troops have been recorded as a result of military actions in recent years, member of the Country for Life party Mesrop Arakelyan wrote on his Facebook account, referring to yesterday's statements by the Azerbaijani president.
Arakelyan recalled that Ilham Aliyev said yesterday in an interview with Azerbaijani media that the commission for demarcating the border of the two countries is discussing one issue - delimiting the border in the Kazakh-Tovuz section (on the Armenian side it borders on Tavush and Gegharkunik).
"What does this mean? Part of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border was formed during the first Artsakh war and has not undergone significant changes over these 30 years. The remaining part of the border (without the Nakhijevan section) was formed after the 2020 war. As a result of Azerbaijani aggression in recent years, Azerbaijan has made significant progress in this area," the politician stated.
In this vein, he drew attention to the fact that the Kazakh-Tovuz section completely borders on Armenia in the section north of Sotk towards Noyemberyan. "In other words, this is a section of the border where no significant military incidents have occurred in recent years, given the inviolability of our positions for 30 years.
And so Azerbaijan, having begun the demarcation of the border in this section, and possibly completing it, is pursuing the goal of making significant progress in this section of the border, further postponing forever the demarcation of an important part of the border for us.
Based on the above, Armenia must clarify its principles of border demarcation, starting the process from those areas where the invasion of Azerbaijani troops was recorded as a result of military operations in recent years," he concluded.
The Azerbaijani leader, in his interview with the Azerbaijani media, uttered further threats against Armenia. Moreover, he again expressed territorial claims to the entire territory of the Republic of Armenia, claiming that these are the historical lands of Azerbaijan, although without providing historical and legal justification for his unfounded statements. Speaking about the process of border demarcation, he again raised the issue of so-called enclaves.
Moreover, Aliyev, inspired by his impunity, continued to demand an extraterritorial corridor through the sovereign territory of Armenia. "Azerbaijanis should not go through border or customs control when traveling from Azerbaijan to Azerbaijan. There is a route through Meghri, it existed in Soviet times: the railway was working, the road was being built. This route must be ensured. If Armenia does not fulfill our condition , then we are not going to open the border with Armenia at any point, and they will forever remain a dead end in the region," Aliyev demanded.
He also acknowledged that the basic conditions for signing a peace treaty have now been created. "Armenia wants this peace treaty to have guarantors. We believe that this is not necessary. We do not need any guarantors there, and if it is signed in a bilateral format, it should be signed. If someone wants to help, then "We have no objection and are not against this. However, this assistance should not be forced," he said.
