ArmInfo. Armenia's position regarding the CSTO will change when specific political assessments are given. Speaker of the Parliament of Armenia Alen Simonyan told journalists during a briefing on December 22.
"As long as there is no statement from the CSTO demanding the withdrawal of the Azerbaijani armed forces from the territory of Armenia, the situation will not change. We do not need, for example, Belarusian or Kazakh military personnel to come here and forcefully withdraw Azerbaijani troops. We need a political assessment, efforts," he said.
The head of the parliament noted that the fact that the CSTO does not protect its territories is equivalent to the fact that the organization is not functioning.
Commenting at the request of journalists on the possible signing of documents that CSTO Secretary General Imangali Tasmagambetov brought with him to Armenia, Simonyan noted that he was not aware of what documents were being discussed. However, he emphasized in this regard that Armenia does not intend to torpedo the activities of the CSTO, and if the documents do not contradict the interests of our country, they will be signed.
At the same time, he noted that there is no anti-Russian sentiment in Armenia. Simonyan emphasized that there is simply a rejection of the policies and steps taken by the Russian side in recent years.
The Speaker of the Parliament also did not rule out that Armenia could chair the EAEU next year. "I don't rule it out, because thanks to this union our economy is growing. I think the government will make the right decision if it agrees," he said.
