Organization of 29th UN conference on climate change in Azerbaijan"COP of shame and dishonor" - La Tribune

Eight major elected officials from the right and the left strongly  denounce in La Tribune Sunday the organization of the 29th UN  conference on climate change in Azerbaijan, seeing it as a "COP of  shame and dishonor, for France, the European Union and the  democraciesЇ.

Azerbaijan will host COP29 from November 11 to 22, 2024, according to  a decision adopted Monday in Dubai by COP28. Very dependent on  hydrocarbons which represent around half of its GDP, the country  obtained the support of Armenia a few days ago, despite the armed  incidents which frequently oppose the two countries.

Denouncing Baku's repression of its opponents, including outside its  territory, the eight elected officials believe that this "scandalous  designationЇ is like a "green light given to the dictatorial regime  of the clan led by (president) Ilham AlievЇ.

Moreover, it comes after its "military coup against Armenia and  Nagorno-Karabakh". The Armenian separatist enclave was completely  reconquered last September by Azerbaijan, during a lightning  offensive.

®It is imperative to put an end to the impunity of the Baku regime.  For this we urgently call on France and the European Union to do  everything to ensure that another location is found to host COP29.Ї,  conclude the eight elected officials, who also point out the  "corruption systemЇ set up by Baku for "expand its influence in  EuropeЇ.
