ArmInfo. Yerevan and Baku are discussing the possibility of withdrawing troops from the interstate border on a mutual basis, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan said on December 13 at a joint briefing with his Estonian counterpart Margus Tsahkna.
"The withdrawal of troops will have a truly positive effect and will help prevent a possible new escalation. I can not say that we are moving towards an agreement, this is an idea that is being discussed, there are other ideas that are being discussed, but I can express the hope that such mutual steps will have a positive impact on the normalization of relations," the Minister said.
The head of the RA Foreign Ministry noted that Azerbaijan must return to the negotiating table, "to the format of meetings." "In fact, most of the work has been done, we need to meet and agree on the final formulation of the peace agreement," Mirzoyan said.
On December 7, Speaker of the Armenian Parliament, Alen Simonyan, said that a peace treaty with Azerbaijan could be signed within a few days, the Speaker of the Parliament told reporters. "I said that this peace treaty can be signed within 10 or 5 days. We have sent our proposals, this is already the 6th proposals exchange. If Azerbaijan does not change anything, does not make new proposals, we can do it within a few days," Simonyan said.
At the same time, speaking about Baku's attempts to link the rights of Karabakh Armenians with the rights of Azerbaijanis who once lived in Armenia, Simonyan noted that Azerbaijan is trying to put such issues on the agenda that will artificially complicate the signing of the peace treaty. He did not rule out that after a certain time, when the degree of anti-Armenian rhetoric in Baku decreases, some of the Armenians will move to live in Azerbaijan, and some of the Azerbaijanis will come to Armenia and trade.
